Steeking Your Knitting

In this 2 hour class you will learn how to cut open your knitting! Steeking involves knitting an item in the round to make the knitting easier, then later cutting it open to turn it into a flat object. Using this technique, you can even turn an old pullover into a cardigan! Topics covered will include a discussion about planning for steeking, 2 methods of securing the steek, cutting knitting wide open, and finishing steps to ensure it looks great when you’re done!

Homework and Supplies: Upon registering for this class, you will be sent a handout for your homework - The Quick and Easy Coffee Cozy Pattern by Robbie Laughlin. This must be completely knitted prior to class, so that you are ready for the steeking and finishing steps. Students who show up with incomplete homework will not be able to participate fully in the lesson. The homework will require approximately 25g each of worsted weight yarn (100% non-super wash wool is best), in two contrasting colours, and 4.5mm double pointed needle or one long circular needle for the magic loop method.

Materials: Bring to class your completed homework, sewing thread and sewing needle, small sharp scissors, a 3.0 or 3.5mm crochet hook, scrap fingering weight yarn, and the leftover yarn and needles from knitting your homework.

Level: Advanced. Students should know how to knit in the rounds on double pointed needles or on one long circular needle using the magic loop method, and be familiar with Fair Isle (Stranded) Knitting including reading charted patterns or have completed the Knit in Colour Class. 

Cancelation Policy: No refunds are provided for students who cancel their class registrations. A store credit or exchange of the date of the class can be given if you provide 3 days notice prior to the first session of your class. Notifications made within 3 days of the start date are not eligible for a store credit or exchange. Exceptions may be made for students who miss classes due to COVID-symptoms - please get in touch.
