Polar Vortex Hat
The Polar Vortex Hat Pattern was written in one of the coldest winters we have ever experienced. You remember the Polar Vortex doncha? Course ya do! Unfortunately there was only one hat made and only one head was kept warm with this cozy hat. Fortunately last winter the Polar Vortex Hat pattern was released to the general knitting public.
This pattern is also called "A Gateway to Brioche Knitting" as it is a very good pattern to try if you have not yet practiced any Brioche Textures. Brioche is a knit stitch technique that resembles ribbing but with extra thick and lofty texture that traps the heat.
This brioche stitch hat is knit with lovely Lichen and Lace Bulky yarn. Lichen and Lace is one of our favourite hand dyers. Residing in Sackville New Brunswick, Lichen and Lace are known for their gorgeous subtle colour-ways inspired by nature. These colours look completely enticing on this plumb one-ply yarn. Lichen and Lace Bulky is comprised of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon so it is silky soft as well as gorgeously coloured. One skein of Lichen and Lace Bulky is just enough to make a Polar Vortex Hat.
Included in this Knit Kit is a "made with love" tag that you can sew on to your finished toque to make it extra special and show the world that your cap is in fact hand made. Each tag is made with washable ultra suede in Canada no less! Some colours of the Lichen and Lace come with a grey tag and others with a brown tag (see images below). The hat is made with 8mm needles - double pointed, or double pointed and 40cm circular, or use a long circular needle and the magic loop method. You can see our selection of needles HERE
The skills required to make this hat are knit, purl, working in rounds, and shaping with decreases.
